Truly

After Roch falls asleep, but before the hour is up when the nurse is due back, I climb off the bed and move over to the very uncomfortable chair that reclines. I want to stay close and allow him to hold me all night, but I know he’ll sleep better without me there.

He didn’t say anything after I told him I loved him, but I didn’t expect him to. For someone so emotionally unavailable, it’s no surprise. Plus, he’s had an eventful night with being run off the road, almost dying, and then finally giving in to his feelings for me.

I can only hope it’s not a temporary thing. All this back and forth between us is making me lose my mind. I know myself, though. It doesn’t matter how many times he changes his mind, I’ll be there, broken-hearted and waiting until the next time he forgets he doesn’t want me.

I watch him sleep for hours. He’s the most beautiful man I’ve ever seen. I love the way his floppy, blond hair has a slight curl on the ends, just enough to give it volume and style without him paying any attention to it.

His daily anxiety is written all over his face. Despite his chin being covered in scruff, I can still make out his sharp jawline that no doubt stays strong from all the clenching he does. Then there are the deep grooves between his eyebrows, a result of the permanent scowl that scares others, but makes me smile.

Even in his sleep, he looks grumpy.

My favorite thing about him, though, is his arms. I’ve spent hours studying every inch of them from where I sit on the back of his bike. The way the veins on his arms protrude as he accelerates and steers does something to me. I know they have nothing to do with masculinity or virility and more to do with his low body fat, but fuck if my body missed the memo.

“Here, hon. I brought you a blanket. These rooms can be chilly,” a nurse whispers, handing me a blanket.

“Thank you.”

“No problem. Do you need anything else? Something to drink?”

“No, I’m fine.”

She quickly checks his vitals without disturbing him.

“He’s a lucky man.”

“I know. If he didn’t have that helmet on, he wouldn’t be here.” A shiver runs up my spine.

“There’s that, but I think he’s lucky because he has a girl who’ll sit here and watch him breathe all night.” She places her hands on her hips, studying her patient.

“Thank you,” I say in a hushed tone, smiling, though I can’t imagine being anywhere else.

“Well, I’m off. Be back in a bit. You should try and get some sleep too.”

I don’t know how long I keep myself awake, but eventually, exhaustion wins out, and my eyes close.
